Carl Dutton, Owner
I started this company in 1984, back when Katy was still mostly rice fields and the Grand Parkway was somebody’s idea on a map. I’m a journeyman technician myself, and I still ride along on jobs when we’re training someone new or when a customer specifically asks. I named the company Mainspring because that single coil carries the full weight of your door - if it fails, nothing else matters. That’s how I think about the work. I’ve adjusted enough springs at midnight to know what happens when someone watches the wrong video and tries it themselves. We don’t do excitement. We show up, we quote the price flat before we start, and we come back if it’s not done right. No paperwork, no arguing. That’s the promise I put in writing on every job.
Marcus T., Lead Technician
Marcus has been with us fourteen years, and he’s the one we send when a door has been hit by a car, a tree limb, or a teenager learning to drive in Cinco Ranch. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers, and he can diagnose a logic-board failure by sound alone. His specialty is the jobs other companies walk away from: custom wood doors in Old Katy that have settled with the foundation, or commercial roll-up systems in the energy corridor that need same-day turnaround. Off the clock, he restores vintage motorcycles in a garage he built himself. He says the wiring isn’t that different.
Elena R., Senior Installer
Elena joined us in 2017 after eight years in commercial construction, and she’s since become our go-to for new-door installs across Katy, from the patio homes in Seven Meadows to the new builds in Cane Island. She’s certified on Clopay, Amarr, and Wayne Dalton product lines, and she’s particular about header alignment - she’ll shim a frame for an hour rather than let a door bind in summer humidity. She trains every apprentice on weatherseal detail, because a gap at the bottom in July means a garage full of mosquitoes and a higher electric bill. She keeps a notebook of every door she’s installed, with the homeowner’s name and the date. It’s up to four volumes now.
James K., Service Coordinator
James answers the phone. That’s his job, and he’s the one who picks up at 2 a.m. when your spring breaks and you’re wondering if you should pull the car out manually. He’s been with us six years, and he knows which neighborhoods in Katy have the older torsion systems from the 1990s build boom, which ones have the newer Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster setups, and which customers need a call thirty minutes before arrival because they work nights. He schedules the routes so our trucks don’t cross the Grand Parkway three times in one morning, and he keeps track of warranty dates without a computer prompt. He grew up in Katy, graduated from Katy High, and he’ll ask about your kid’s baseball team while he’s pulling up your service history.
Darnell W., Apprentice Technician
Darnell came to us in 2023 through a trade program at Houston Community College, and he’s finishing his journeyman hours under Marcus. He’s already certified on cable and roller replacement, and he’s learning spring work the way we do it - with winding bars, safety glasses, and no shortcuts. The first door he installed solo was in a garage in Firethorne where the homeowner watched the whole process and asked more questions than Darnell had answers for. He called me that evening to go through what he’d missed. That’s the kind of technician he’s becoming. He lives in Brookshire and commutes in early to load his truck and check inventory.
